I seem to be on a roll... 2nd post in a day... ;)
But had to express this...
Started thinking about it after reading another post... "Access Policies in Companies - Wats your take??"
How different organisation culture differ.. & the you cant find a similarity between the two.
Something like this .. i am experience these dayz...
My first expirence in an organisation was in Air India Ltd... A typical PSU... employees not at all bothered about output.. as they could not be chucked out...
Then came Larsen & Toubro Ltd.... A fantastic organisation, I believe... fantastic atmosphere... gr8 ethics & formalization accross levels..
Now .. Reliance Industries Ltd... aaa... too early to comment.. but.. early signs .. suggest.. tht it is not matching to mine expectation, especially after my previous organisation (a hint of R. Patil here ;) )..
But after reading above blog... i found tht... some simple things like.. "how tea/coffee is served" makes such a difference in the thinking & thus the culture...
In RIL.. the tea/coffee.. is served directly on the table.. & there is a something unique here... to a few at the top.. are served tea in a cup with a saucer.. & to others only in cup... something small thing like this... show tht @RIL they want to make distinction between the two classes..
On the other end... In L&T.. the tea/coffee container was kept at a corner of the dept. at everyone who wants it.. himself goes & takes it... & everyone.. means... everyone.. up & down the organisation ladder... wot it does is... 1st of all the atmosphere is quiet good.. every1 treated equally...
One more thing the 2nd system does.. is that.. it gives time for employees for themselves.. as they move out of there places.. take a walk.... & relax from there work a while... which is not in the 1st system...
Such small things can be interpreted as .. in RIL.. they want people to take fewer breaks.. whereas in the 2nd system.. leisure time is given..
I also observed the satisfaction level in both organisation.. & the difference is very evident... so the relationship I am trying to draw just from the serving of tea/coffee.. is justified or not... I am letting them u all to judge....

Interesting observation you have there!
ReplyDeleteAt times like this I like the whole OB concept, however much we mocked it during sem 1 I personally like OB fundaz.
And your point is valid. It does create a rift. Reliance is a khandani venture, dictating terms as they please. I dont like them !
no doubt hell lot matters due to Org culture.
ReplyDeleteReliance is often said to be a not such a good place to work for, because employees dont get much freedom in decision making, because everything is decided at the senior levels, to the extent about where a pottery item would be placed in their petrol pumps, too much formalization.
But they have a lot of aggression, they will try n screw anyone who tries to compete, with various means.Imagine the whole DAKC ws set up in xactly 1.5 yrs. With any other company this would not have been possible. Imagine the employees motivation levels when they have created Jamnagar refinery out of nothing in a record time. They mean Only Business and they know how to do it. perhaps these things would not hav been possible without well laid plans and absolute commands at higher levels. they believe in Employees getting a kick out of the Business on the whole doing well
ICICI too is aggressive.on the other hand they give a lot of independence to employees even at the lowest levels....n end up making JHOLS bigtime at every level...bt still growing like hell
few more things....in compnies like icici n such banks u gt to be wearing blazers while meeting nyone above GM level and calling everyone Sir. in IT companies u will be wearing jeans even in front of ur directors and calling them with their first names.
But u wud be sharing the same table fr lunch n having a drink on the weeknd with ur Genral Manager's in formal companies like ICICI, Reliance, etc inspite of the hierarchicl structure.
While in IT companies u wud hav lunch more often with people of ur grade, n even party with colleagues of ur grade and very rarely shake a leg with your Project Manager inspite of the so-called flat structure
Perspectives.
can say this coz hav worked in all these 3 organizations for a year each.
I dont have lots of experiences on this...but i canb say that the culture at radio Mirchi is awesome..
ReplyDeletethere is no Sir's and subordinates..
any one sits anywhere..
walk 2 any1 talk anything
all these ppl look 4 is good attitude..
amol is also right..
those OB fundas are not jus text, they have a good significance
